What to do during Spring.
Your garden will begin to come
alive after the long winter
months but be aware that there
could well be the odd very
hard frost.
The best thing about March is
that later in the month the
clocks go forward then you will
have the luxury of the extra
daylight to spend even more
time in your garden, don't waste it!
Fences.
March winds demolish thousands
of fences around the U.K. Very
often the wooden fence posts
will have become rotten at the
base after many years of neglect.
It is time to decide whether or
not to replace them with the same
or maybe go for concrete, which
will or course last forever.
Many people will immediately be
vociferously against concrete
but why? It is most peculiar that
the majority of fence erectors do
not finish the job and stain the
concrete posts the same colour as
the panels. Have a quick look
around your local area and see
how many concrete posts are left
untreated.
Stain them the same colour as your
fence panels and they quite simply
disappear. Simple! Take a quick look
at the picture on the right with the
pair of standard Amelanchier canadensis
lamarkii in front of a fence with
concrete posts.

Mulch bare soil.
Cover with farmyard manure, compost
or chipped bark to retain water in
future dry spells. Very important
for any young trees, shrubs and
perennials that have been recently
planted. Always water the soil before
applying a mulch which should be at
least 5cm deep.
