April - Planting - Saving Water

Always choose your plants before
they start to flower, in dry weather
the plant will soon wilt because once
flowering starts the root growth will
stop.

A top tip is to use water retaining
gel in your pots and hanging baskets
it really does work. Help build up the
roots of your plants with a good dose
of fertiliser before the end of May.

Weeds compete for moisture, so get
rid of them now!

Perhaps one of the most important
things you should be doing is to mulch,
2" of mulch will hold a great deal of
moisture.

The Lawn

Dont cut the lawn to short, cut less
frequently than you normally would.

If you are about to sow or turf a lawn
do it now or leave it until the Autumn.

Feed your lawn now in time for the
fertiliser to be watered in by the rain.

What you need to do during the water
shortage.
Buy a water butt, it will cost you a lot less
than you think, just think all that free rain water
coming off your roof. Collect water in buckets
from your bath, shower and wash up water. It
is not as difficult as you might think.

Bath or shower with a friend - just
think you could be discussing the design
of your new border for next year!
(your favourite WebMaster is
getting carried away again!)

Line all your pots and hanging baskets with
plastic, not forgetting to make small holes
for drainage.
Use lots of mulch and use porous membranes to
keep down weeds.
